QUICK ANSWERS
No fluff. Just the keyword-tagging facts.
What is utm_term? +
utm_term is the UTM parameter that records the paid-search keyword behind an ad click. It is the only UTM parameter designed for keyword-level tracking, and it maps to the 'Session manual term' dimension in GA4.
When should I use utm_term? +
Use it for paid search campaigns — Google Ads, Bing Ads and other PPC platforms — especially when auto-tagging is off or you advertise on platforms without automatic keyword pass-through. Skip it for email, social and display.
Do I need utm_term if Google Ads auto-tagging is enabled? +
Usually not. With auto-tagging linked to Analytics, keyword data flows automatically. Manual utm_term is for edge cases: non-Google platforms, deliberate overrides, or strict URL policies that forbid auto-tagging.
What is the difference between utm_term and utm_content? +
utm_term records which keyword triggered the click (paid search). utm_content records which creative or link variant got the click (A/B tests, placements). They can be used together on the same URL.
Should utm_term use + or - or _ for spaces? +
Any of the three works if the whole account stays consistent. Plus (+) is the classic query-string encoding, hyphen (-) reads cleanest, underscore (_) matches many databases. Never mix them.
Should utm_term be lowercase? +
Yes, always. Analytics treats CRM+Software and crm+software as different values, splitting keyword reports.
What are keyword match types? +
Match types control which searches trigger your ads: broad (related searches), phrase (same meaning, sensible order), exact (same meaning or intent). utm_term tags the canonical keyword you bid on, not every raw matched query.
Can I use utm_term for competitor keywords? +
Yes as a reporting label — values like competitorname+alternative are common. Bidding on competitor trademarks is a separate question governed by ad platform policies; check them first.
Is the TermTag generator free? +
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser using crypto.getRandomValues(). No signup, no server, no tracking — see the privacy page.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO? +
No. Search engines ignore UTM values when ranking pages. Keep UTMs off internal links to avoid analytics session issues, but there is no ranking impact.
